Legal notice: miqpo is not a transport service
miqpo is a carpooling (shared-trip) platform, not a commercial transport service, ride-hailing app or taxi service.
1. What is carpooling?
Carpooling (also called "shared trip", "shared car" or "ridesharing") is the practice where:
A private individual plans a trip in their personal vehicle
Offers their free seats to other people with the same destination
Passengers share only the costs (fuel and tolls)
The driver makes no profit and earns no money from the transport
Carpooling around the world
- Europe: shared-trip models with tens of millions of users, regulated for nearly two decades.
- United States: carpooling platforms built into widely used navigation apps.
- Latin America: carpooling is growing as a mobility alternative in major cities.
In Europe and the United States, carpooling has had regulated, widely used models for years.
2. Legal differences: carpooling vs. commercial transport
| Legal criterion | Carpooling (miqpo) | Commercial transport / taxis |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose of the trip | The trip already existed for the driver | The trip is created to make money |
| Type of driver | Private individual (student, employee) | Professional with a commercial license |
| Frequency | Occasional (1 to 4 trips/week) | Main or daily activity (full-time) |
| Vehicle | Own and private (personal use) | May be a fleet or rented for work |
| Price | Costs only (fuel + tolls ÷ passengers) | Fare with a profit margin |
| Profit | No (only recovers costs) | Yes (generates net income) |
| Regulation | Collaborative economy (classification under review) | Public transport (requires a license) |
| Insurance | SOAT + private vehicle insurance | Mandatory commercial insurance + SOAT |
| Taxes | No (does not generate taxable income) | Yes (tax return) |
| Who travels? | Closed, verified community | Any member of the public |

4. How miqpo operates
1. We are not transport intermediaries
miqpo neither organizes nor provides transport services. We are a technology platform that makes it easy for private individuals to connect.
Example: Analogy: a classified-ads site connects buyers and sellers, but it isn't a store.
2. Drivers are not our employees
Drivers on miqpo are independent users who use the platform for their own benefit (sharing costs). They have no employment relationship with miqpo. They receive neither salary nor instructions from us.
3. The charge is for technology, not for transport
Any charge for using the platform corresponds to the technology service (development, hosting, verification, security), not to a commission on the transport.
Example: Just as an online marketplace charges for the use of its platform and not for the products sold on it, miqpo charges for the technology, not for the trip.
4. Institutional verification is safety, not control
We verify institutional emails to look after the community's safety, not to control drivers. It's the same as when a professional platform confirms that you belong to a company.
5. The price only covers costs
In our Terms we explicitly prohibit drivers from charging more than the real costs (fuel + tolls + reasonable wear). If we detect excessive profit, we suspend the account.
Commitment to authorities and regulators
miqpo operates with full transparency and is available to work with:
- Ministry of Transport and the Transport Superintendency
- Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC)
- Traffic and mobility authorities
- Other competent authorities in Colombia
